Vicky Tiel’s sexy, figure hugging dresses are a mix of ready to wear style with couture-like craftsmanship. Tiel is one of the few American designers to have owned and operated a fashion business out of Paris and kept the atelier running for decades. She studied art and design at the Pratt Institute and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. During college Tiel was active in the Greenwich Village youthquake scene. She sold her early designs of fringe vests, mini skirts, and leather items at various trendy boutiques in the area. After completing her education in 1964 Tiel moved to Paris to join Louis Feraud’s design team. Her designs followed the same mod style she cultivated in New York. Her self named boutique kept abreast of new trends and after the dramatic styles of the 1960’s turned to a more elegant direction in the 1970’s. This is where Tiel came into her own as a designer, creating sensual yet casual dresses in body hugging draped matte jersey fabric. Her designs were examples of an old hollywood fantasy. She focused on eveningwear and created lines with tuxedo inspired pieces and revealing gowns. Her vintage designs continue to be a favorite of daring fashion lovers today.
