Piano Shawl

The art of the fine embroidery of China has been collectable for centuries. First traveling to Europe through the mountains and deserts to then sailing the oceans for faster delivery and in part creating the Panama canal! The Spanish were the ones who imported these shawls for centuries, thus why they are ingrained in the culture there. It is said that it is the Spanish flamenco dancers who added the fringe for their dances. With easier import, the shawls reached their height of popularity in the Art Deco era, that is from where we draw our inspiration. The designer Paul Poiret famously first used them in his lavish designs for evening cloaks. These inspire our cocoon and kimono shapes. Effortless to wear pieces which showcase the beauty of the full shawls. In the 1990s John Galliano as well as Alexander McQueen interpreted them into bias cut gowns. Themselves inspired by the saucy photographs of the 1920s and ‘30s where trendy ladies were photographed barely covered, draped in the popular shawls. These both inspire our piano shawl dresses, designed to look as though they are simply draped around the figure, a favorite look for a woman looking to be romantically seductive.
