Kenzo

“The mechanism of makings dresses was not as rigid as it is today. During the voyage that brought me here, I came into contact with all sorts of cultures, saw traditional clothes, was touched by various colors and smells, and met people at ports of call. These things all came together later when I began making dresses.” -Kenzo Takada

Well known for his mixture of worldly styles, Kenzo Takada, better known for his eponymous line, Kenzo, could be seen as a fashion traveler, picking up cultural ideas from around the world. He is beloved for his bright, graphic patterns, a mixture of traditional Japanese and African designs. His clothes speak to his free spirit and are often culturally influenced from European folk style skirts and Scandinavian sweaters to South American knitted designs.

Kenzo studied art in school and designed apparel and patterns for a department store in Tokyo. Soon after Kenzo moved to Paris where he interned and worked as a design assistant for five years. Kenzo opened his first Tokyo boutique in 1970 featuring all original designs.
