“I was never so directly inspired by fashion. It always came from somewhere else.” -Helmut Lang
Stark, minimalist, and layered; Helmut Lang perfectly captured city life in 1980’s. Lang’s aesthetic could be described as intellectual and stripped down, but his pieces also carried bondage elements adding an heir of strong sexuality to his pieces. Helmut Lang started out as a banker working in Vienna but was dissatisfied with the options for workwear. In 1977 he started creating made-to-measure apparel in his apartment and expanded to his first boutique, Bou Bou Lang, in only two years time.
Lang desired to expand further and launched the Helmut Lang line in 1986. His style was a welcomed departure from the wildly embellished style many brands were showing in the 1980’s. His designs were simplistic but expertly tailored and featured juxtapositions in texture. Lang left the brand in 2005 and the label continues to echo his aesthetic.
