George Peter Stavropoulos

George Peter Stavropoulos

A George Peter Stavropoulos gown makes it wearer appear to float on air. Best known for his sumptuous chiffon dresses Stavropoulos was influenced by his Grecian ancestors and often used classic toga-like column silhouette in his designs. He got his start in New York in 1961 where he opened his first shop. First Lady of the time, Lady Bird Johnson, took notice of his timeless designs and invited him to White House dinners. After this initial recognition other famous women began wearing Stavropoulos gowns including Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Streisand, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

His classic, minimalist design style broke through the fads of the decade. Instead of radically changing his designs per season Stavropoulos focused on comfort and ease of movement in his gowns. His suits featured large kimono sleeves and he preferred simple accessories in his evening looks including free flowing shawls that could be worn over the shoulders or as a belt.
