Don Loper

Don Loper

Costume designer, Don Loper, wore many hats in his show business career. Not only was he a costume designer but he also worked in choreography, dance, acting, and producing. His design work featured in many classic films from the 1950’s. Born in Toledo Ohio, Loper began his career as a dancer. He was talented enough to be featured alongside Ginger Rogers in the 1944 film, Lady in the Dark.

His presence in Hollywood was noticed and he began creating custom gowns for iconic actresses like Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, and Lana Turner. He favored classic silhouettes that highlighted the waist and fell away from the hips in feminine fabrics like chiffon and silk. He steered stars away from the sack dress style popularized by Balenciaga with the philosophy that clothes should flatter the body. He notably acted out his real life profession on “I Love Lucy” playing a fashion designer that dressed a very sunburned Lucy in a scratchy tweed suit.
