Ann Demeulemeester

Ann Demeulemeester

“I'm not confused about what's happening in fashion, because I follow my own direction and go.” Ann Demeulemeester

Ann Demeulemeester, born in Belgium, is best known for her gothic, minimalist anti-fashion. She started out in the world of fine arts and credits her time in art school for sparking her fascination with form and portraiture. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine arts in 1981 and debuted her first fashion line in 1985 and officially moved on from fine arts to fashion design. Her somber style took inspiration from Japanese design, androgynous rock stars like Patti Smith, and the art world. Her iconic pieces include slouchy pants, knitted sweaters with menswear inspired jackets and accessories. She announced she was leaving her fashion house in 2013 to pursue other interests and her last collection was shown at Paris fashion week that year.
