Zandra Rhodes Hand

“Change is the only thing we’ve got.” - Zandra Rhodes

Known for her statement making personal style, Zandra Rhodes lives through her artistic vision. She is a talented textile designer who expanded her love of vibrant patterns to garment construction. Rhodes attended both the Royal College of Art and the Medway College of Art in Textile Design. In 1969 she moved to New York and opened her own shop in response to her designs being labeled too outrageous for conservative London manufacturers. It was in New York where her vibrant designs were featured in Vogue magazine and were soon picked up by major retailers like Saks and Henri Bendel.

Rhodes’ designs are often described as feminine and princess-like but with a subversive punk edge. She mixes up feminine, floral inspired layered chiffon and handpainted organza with glamorized rock and roll elements such as ripped fabrics and jeweled safety pins. She has dressed numerous stars including Princess Diana, Jacqueline Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Freddie Mercury. Her influence has expanded beyond fashion with Rhodes introducing her own line of home decor and a cosmetics line with MAC. She has also worked in costume design with the San Diego Opera and the Houston Grand Opera.
