Iconoclastic, avant-garde, and structurally shocking, Thierry Mugler is a dynamic force in vintage fashion. His art training started at the young age of 14 when he was accepted into the School of Fine Arts in Paris. He began a career in the Rhine Opera Ballet but only stayed one year before starting freelance design work. At age 20 was an apprentice for Gudule boutique. In 1973, he created his first label, Café de Paris, and then founded his own brand the following year.

Mugler’s inspiration is varied and always visually exciting. His designs echo a mix of fetish clothing, old Hollywood glamor, medieval armor, and 1950’s car designs. Known for his severe lines, structured shoulders and corseted waists in rigid materials like leather, chrome, PVC, and a temperature-sensitive color change plastic. His structured suits dominated the late 1980’s and brought an element of performance back to fashion. Fans of his work include Madonna, Lady Gaga (who also walked in his show), Gwen Stefani, and Beyonce.
