Guy Laroche

“I wanted to be different. I came to New York.” -Guy Laroche

French designer, Guy Laroche, started out working in Paris as a milliner. He moved to New York to follow his creative pursuits and started to build his skills in apparel by working as a stylist. When he was offered a design assistant position at Jean Desses he returned to Paris for his first taste of true fashion design. It was at Desses where he perfected his cutting skill, working heavily with chiffon.

In 1956 he debuted his first line inside his French apartment, featuring a restrained elegance and classic pieces. From Baroque inspired fabrics in bouffant skirts and delicate black chiffon blouses, Laroche’s style embodied a simple sophistication that later became his trademark.
