Escada

Escada

Escada is synonymous with the sleek, clean, sophisticated look of the early 1990’s. The name Escada, an Irish purebred racehorse, seems fitting for the brand’s powerful look and ability to surpass other brands in its mass appeal. In 1976 the brand was formed in Munich, Germany by Wolfgang and Margarethe Ley. Escada’s debut collection was an instant hit, featuring detailed knit work and innovative fabric combinations.

Head designer Margarethe Ley stressed the importance of appealing to the fashion consumer when creating each line and it showed through their massive success in the 1990’s. Margarethe passed in 1992 and designer Michael Stolzenburg succeeded her, bringing the brand more towards the sexy youthful look they became known for. In 1994 Escada launched Escada Sport, a sister line of trendy bags and accessories.
